HUNTING TIPS & TACTICS

The Wood duck is a member of the puddle duck family. The drakes are known for their gorgeous plumage. Key identifying factors are: the glossy green head cut with white stripes, a chestnut breast and buffy sides.

The Wood duck is known for nesting in trees which is the signature trait, however as a cavity nester, Wood Ducks take readily to nest boxes as well.

Although the Woodies normally fly in small flocks, they can be decoyed if set up in the right positon. They love eating acorns and can commonly be found during the hunting season in wooded swamps, marshes, streams, beaver ponds, and small lakes. They stick to wet areas with trees or extensive cattails.

With the advantage of many new lines of Wood duck decoys on the market these days, it doesn’t take much more than a 6 pack of Wood duck decoys to fill up a spread. In fact many times if hunters do their homework a head of time and find a spot the Woodies have been using, just being set up in the right position is the best method for success.

Being early risers, don’t be surprised by a flock of Woodies swinging through the decs right at shooting time. These beautiful little birds are just as delightful on the table as they are on the wall.
