HUNTING TIPS & TACTICS

In hunting the Redhead species specifically, as with any diver species, location is key. The Redheads and Canvasbacks, as well as Bluebills, tend to feed together in the same general areas.

They are all attracted to feeding in larger bodies of water with 3 – 6 feet in depth and like the eel grasses, wild celery and coon tail type vegetation’s. Thus scouting is one of the most important keys to success as anything.

When setting up a spread for Redheads, using a nice mixed spread of diver decoys is important. Many hunters make the mistake of having too much white in their diver spreads, which on a bright and sunny day can almost look like a spread of seagulls from a distance.

Thus, adding in a decent amount of dark decoys into your diver spread can really be an attribute. Running long lines and large spreads of up to 100 decoys can be important on large bodies of water but may not be needed on smaller, deeper marshes where too many decoys can almost be a detriment. Knowing the area you are hunting and the general conditions is always important.

Redheads tend not to be as wary of a duck and will usually decoy in well if the spread and location are right. Redheads are also attracted to Mallards as well, being a dominant species, so adding in a few Mallard decoys to the spread doesn’t hurt.

Redheads are known to be one of the more tasty ducks and like the Canvasback, if not overcooked, can be a real treat!
